Safe Egress

The City of New York fire department is currently reviewing legislation that would increase penalties for violations of safe egress codes.

Notwithstanding such review, the fundamental importance of providing for employees’ escape during emergencies cannot be questioned.

Below is quote from a recent letter to this writer from the Chief of Fire Prevention, FDNY, on this topic.

“Again, you are advised that all designated building exits remain unlocked, unimpeded and unobstructed at times when a building is occupied or partially occupied. With this assurance you will not have to be concerned with potential penalties and fines.”

As a reminder Chapter members are urged to periodically evaluate safe egress requirements as part of overall emergency planning.
