"Fire Chief Leadership"
A New York fire chief recently attending the Master’s degree program at the Center for Homeland Security and
Defense at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA, presented these thoughts on leadership:
Let no man’s ghost come back to say his training let him down. (Leadership quality: Knowledge)
Firefighters are on loan to you. Your job is to make sure you return them to their families after the tour is over.
(Leadership qualities: Responsibility. Putting the good and welfare of your firefighters before anything else.)
What you see here, what you hear here, what you do here, when you leave here, let it stay here.
(Leadership quality: Trust and bonding)
Firemen are going to get killed. When they join the department they face that fact. When a man becomes a
fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished. What he does after that is all in the line of work.
(Leadership quality: Courage and humility)
